Mankell faceless killers7/6/2023 ![]() Where Wahloo and Sjowall used the Beck series to critique the welfare state of the 60s and 70s from a more radical Left perspective, Wallander's perspective is more conservative and the Sweden he patrols is a place that seems to be on the verge of the abyss because of the "successes" of socialism. They've an heir now though in the form of Henning Mankell and his slovenly but stolid hero, Inspector Kurt Wallander. It's unlikely anyone's read many Swedish mysteries since. But the last of them was published in 1975 and the series now appears in the Black Lizard/Vintage Crime series. ![]() ![]() ![]() We mystery fans of a certain age have all read the Martin Beck police procedurals of the husband and wife team, Per Wahloo and Maj Sjowall. ![]()

![]() ![]() “The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion,” Haidt 2012 They are also summarized in the table below. I’ll briefly review each and discuss the political implications of these moral taste buds. Haidt, a psychologist, leans heavily on evolutionary psychology to explain the origins of these foundations. The Evolution of Haidt’s Moral Foundations ![]() Some people prefer salty food, some prefer sweet. Some people taste Fairness in terms of equality while others do so in terms of proportionality. ![]() Some political ideologies rely on the Care/Harm foundation while others rely on Loyalty/Betrayal. These moral foundations, according to Haidt, act as our political “taste buds” and explain our political preferences in the same way that our lingual taste buds explain our culinary preferences. Haidt argues that humans have six moral foundations through which we view politics and policy: Care/Harm, Fairness/Cheating, Loyalty/Betrayal, Authority/Subversion, Sanctity/Degradation, and Liberty/Oppression. In his groundbreaking book, “The Righteous Mind,” Professor Jonathan Haidt attempts to answer the first question by developing a framework that he calls Moral Foundations Theory (MFT). Why are good people divided by politics and religion? Why do some people like spicy food while others do not? The answers, it turns out, are related. ![]()

![]() ![]() 1 Oliver Goldsmith's comedy, like Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser (1845) (the opera we have in place of his projected dramatization of Luther's wedding), is an object lesson in learning to see a bourgeois wife. The play ends with the proclamation of a wedding the following day when Charles Marlow is to take as his wife the woman he previously considers unmarriageable because she appears to him, alternately, the focus of too great a reverence and the mere quarry of a passing and socially inconsequential passion. And that should be enough to put us on our guard. It celebrates it without being able to represent it. ![]() ![]() At least as far as its central couple is concerned, She Stoops to Conquer: Or, The Mistakes of a Night (1773) is a celebration of bourgeois marriage. ![]()
